Seen & Heard co-founder Chris Braitch connected recently with Suzanne Scott from Trauma Informed Parenting (TIP), a charity based in Scotland.
TIP offer workshops and support for parents, carers, teachers and anyone living or working with children with challenging behaviours due to trauma or additional needs to apply a “trauma lens”. These parenting techniques are for all children.
The conversation sought to understand more about how their trauma informed approach could benefit the boarding and independent school system in the UK, and how Seen & Heard hope to help introduce forward-thinking approaches like those offered by TIP, into those schools over time.
In this conversation we learnt about an amazing resource for parents, a FREE online 4hr trauma informed parenting workshop that the charity run. You can find details of how to get tickets through Eventbrite at this end of this post.
Chris Braitch says “I personally found parenting as an ex-boarder incredibly difficult, I didn’t have my parents around to model behaviours much of the time. When I was at home, things were often quite detached, or chaotic and changeable because of my parent’s health, work or lifestyle. Being an empathetic an understanding parent is something I got wrong so often with my own children, until recent years where things have improved thanks to my own healing journey and understanding of trauma and how it affects us. I wish I’d have had a course like this to help me when my kids were younger!”.
