In this powerful episode of the Seen & Heard podcast, Chris Braitch speaks with journalist, author and campaigner Alex Renton about the lasting impact of boarding school trauma, systemic abuse, and the culture of silence within elite private schools.
Alex shares his own experience of abuse at prep school, the lifelong effects it had on his identity, relationships, and career, and how it led him to become one of the UK’s leading voices exposing abuse, neglect and institutional cover-ups within boarding schools. He reflects on the emotional neglect, “privileged abandonment,” and systemic failures that shaped generations of children sent away from home too young.
Together, Chris and Alex explore the deeper issues behind boarding school culture, from emotional disconnection and shame to failures in safeguarding, alumni wellbeing, mandatory reporting, and why schools must do better when survivors come forward. They also discuss Alex’s work supporting survivors, his database of over 1,600 reports across more than 700 schools, and the urgent need for real accountability and reform.
This is an honest, compassionate and necessary conversation about healing, truth, and protecting future generations.
