Some life stories are shaped by hardship. Others are defined by what we choose to do next. In this episode of the Seen & Heard Podcast, Robert Montagu shares his journey from early trauma within the boarding school system to retraining as a psychotherapist and building a charity that made family therapy accessible across the southwest of England.

Raised in a culture where silence often protected institutions rather than children, Robert experienced adversity at a time when safeguarding systems were far less robust than today. Disclosure did not automatically lead to action, and conversations about institutional harm were rare. Yet rather than being defined solely by those experiences, Robert describes how they shaped his purpose. As a teenager, he began informally supporting other pupils who were struggling. Later, after a career in business, he retrained as a psychotherapist and founded a charity offering low-cost family therapy. Over two decades, the service expanded across multiple counties, supporting thousands of families and working closely with health professionals.

Throughout the conversation, Robert reflects on several key themes:

• The lasting impact of early trauma
• The importance of accessible mental health support for children
• The need for clear safeguarding accountability
• Addressing bullying in schools
• Understanding family systems in healing

He also discusses his memoir, A Humour of Love, in which he explores the complex dynamics of family silence and institutional culture. His perspective is thoughtful and reform-focused, emphasising prevention rather than blame.

One of the most powerful messages in the episode is this: protecting children requires courage. Families, schools, and institutions must prioritise safety and transparency over reputation. Robert’s story is ultimately one of transformation — moving from survival to service, and from silence to advocacy. It is a reminder that while early experiences shape us, they do not have to define the limits of our contribution.
