Director and Lead Therapist of Pure Potential Scotland with over 25 years of experience working in crisis, mental health, and addiction. Carolyn uses her lived experience as a queer woman with a trauma history and many years of feeling trapped in suicidal distress, to empower her to be ‘a companion through the darkness to joy.’
Early on in her work life, Carolyn co-developed a holistic crisis intervention and self-harm service in Glasgow in 2004. After this, Carolyn trained to become an Integrative Counselling Therapist, attachment and Trauma-informed. Carolyn is a Trainer in wellbeing, resilience, and suicide intervention and a consultant in suicidality and crisis services. Carolyn has been at forefront of empowering the voices of those with lived experience through deep listening and ensuring peoples’ voices create meaningful change to service provision. In 2017, she authored a paper with North East Glasgow Health Improvement, proposing an out of hours crisis café for Glasgow. In 2020, Glasgow HSCP commissioned a service based on this proposal, the Compassionate Distress Responsive Service, launched by Glasgow Association of Mental Health. Carolyn was the consultant in the development and delivery of Wave After Wave Training: Providing a Compassionate Response after Suicide, co-produced by people bereaved by suicide and staff in 2022.
Trained in Physical Theatre Practice and passionate about dance, Carolyn is a fully qualified Movement Medicine Apprentice Teacher & Facilitator. Carolyn brings movement, the body, heart connection and nature into her work supporting others to connect to their powerful resources for transformation. Most important to Carolyn is our reconnection to hope and joy, our true selves, and our innate love.
